Peppol ID: What it is and How to Choose the Right Identification Type

As of January 1, 2026, electronic invoicing will become mandatory for all Belgian companies doing business with other VAT-liable businesses. As this date approaches, the need for clear information on exactly how Peppol works is growing. One of the most frequently asked questions revolves around the Peppol ID, the digital address that determines where your e-invoices are sent and from where they are received.

What is a Peppol ID?

A Peppol ID is a unique address within the Peppol network. It functions as a digital recognition point that identifies your organization during the exchange of e-invoices and other electronic documents. Compare it to a phone number that ensures your invoice always reaches the correct recipient.

How is a Peppol ID structured?

Every Peppol ID follows the same international structure. The complete identification consists of three parts.

Example Peppol ID for Banqup SA: Iso6523 actorid upis::0208:0649860804

  • iso6523 actorid upis: Refers to the schema internationally used for organization identification. Within Peppol, this is the standard and is therefore often not shown separately in many interfaces.

  • 0208: Is the code indicating the type of registration number the identification is based on. This code differs per type, such as the company number, VAT number, GLN, or DUNS.

  • 0649860804: Is the actual number that uniquely identifies your organization. In the example, this is a Belgian company number.

Available Peppol ID Types in Belgium

Peppol only allows official identification systems. In Belgium, every company must be mandatorily registered with its company number. Other identification types are optional and are used for specific processes or internal routing.

The company number and VAT number remain the standard choice in most situations. Nevertheless, an additional identifier can be useful. Companies with multiple establishments or complex structures, in particular, sometimes use extra types to better distribute invoices internally.

Peppol ID linked to a GLN number

A GLN number, or Global Location Number, is internationally managed by GS1. It offers a convenient way to distinguish different locations or departments within one company. Large organizations often use GLN to automatically send invoices to the correct team, such as warehouses, financial services, or specific delivery points.

Peppol ID linked to a DUNS number

The DUNS number is a globally recognized identification system from Dun and Bradstreet. It does not change when a company merges or changes its name, which makes it particularly stable. This type is used less within Peppol, but it can be useful for companies that are internationally active or frequently change their legal structure.

Peppol ID linked to an IBAN number

An IBAN provides a unique identification linked to a bank account. Although this type is correct and internationally applicable, it is used less in practice. For most companies, the company number and VAT number are more logical and simpler to manage.
